Cervical Cancer Screening & HPV Vaccination

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when detected early. Regular Pap smears and HPV screenings help identify abnormal cervical cells before they develop into cancer. Additionally, HPV vaccination provides long-term protection against the human papillomavirus (HPV), a leading cause of cervical cancer.

At DYU Obstetrics and Gynaecology, we provide comprehensive cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination services, ensuring women of all ages receive the best preventive care to protect their reproductive health.

Who Needs Cervical Cancer Screening?
1. Women Aged 21 and Above
  • Pap Smear every 3 years (ages 21-29)
  • Pap Smear + HPV Test every 5 years (ages 30-65)
  • Women with previous abnormal Pap results may need more frequent screenings.
2. Women with Risk Factors for Cervical Cancer
  • History of HPV infection or abnormal Pap test results
  • Weakened immune system (HIV, long-term steroid use)
  • Smoking, which increases cervical cancer risk
  • Family history of cervical cancer
3. Women Over 65
  • May discontinue screening if they have had regular normal test results in the past.

What to Expect During a Cervical Cancer Screening
1. Pap Smear Test
  • A quick, painless procedure where a small sample of cervical cells is collected.
  • The sample is examined for precancerous or abnormal cells.
2. HPV Test
  • Detects high-risk HPV strains that may lead to cervical cancer.
  • Often done alongside the Pap smear for more comprehensive screening.
3. Colposcopy (If Needed)
  • If an abnormal Pap result occurs, a colposcopy may be performed.
  • Involves a detailed examination of the cervix using a magnifying instrument.

HPV Vaccination: Who Should Get It?
  • Recommended for girls and boys aged 9-14 (best protection before HPV exposure).
  • Catch-up vaccination available for individuals up to age 45.
  • Protects against HPV strains linked to cervical, vaginal, and other cancers.
  • Given in two or three doses, depending on age at first vaccination.
